Teaching ballet can be incredibly rewarding—but it can also be demanding. Whether you are just beginning your teaching journey or have many years of experience, there is always something new to learn, new ideas to explore and new connections to make.

WACBTA brings together ballet teachers who believe in lifelong learning, professional support and sharing knowledge. Through workshops, resources and a welcoming community of colleagues, we help teachers continue to grow, gain fresh perspectives and feel connected to the wider ballet teaching community in Western Australia.

Every teacher has questions, challenges and moments of uncertainty.

WACBTA brings together teachers from a wide range of backgrounds, schools and teaching traditions who are generous in sharing their experience and learning from one another.

Whether you’re looking for practical ideas, fresh inspiration or simply the reassurance that others face the same challenges, you’ll become part of a supportive professional community where everyone has something to contribute—and everyone has something to learn.

The best teachers never stop learning.

WACBTA offers practical workshops, professional conversations and learning opportunities that help you build your skills, explore new ideas and continue developing throughout your teaching career. We want every workshop you attend to leave you with practical ideas and fresh inspiration that you can put into practice in your classroom straight away.

Members enjoy discounted access to workshops and events, making ongoing professional development both accessible and rewarding.

Whether you are a solo teacher in a studio, a member of a larger teaching staff, or a student teacher, we have a membership that is perfect for you!

Choose from Personal, Corporate or Student Memberships.

A Personal Membership is available to anyone who is currently teaching classical ballet in WA, has previously taught classical ballet, is training to teach classical ballet, or has an interest in interacting with the classical ballet community. People who take out Personal Memberships are referred to as full members under our constitution.

Full members must be 18 years or older. Full members receive access to educational events at discounted rates, are able to vote at General Meetings and are eligible to nominate to become officers of the Association (Chairperson, Deputy-Chairperson, Secretary, or Treasurer), or to become a member of the Management Committee.

*Please note that memberships are per calendar year. For new memberships being applied for after 1 July, the membership fee reduces by 50% to reflect that the membership is only for 6 months.

Studios may pay a yearly fee (per calendar year) to become a Corporate Member of WA Classical Ballet Teachers’ Association Inc.

This fee will allow an unlimited number of teachers from that studio to access member benefits under the umbrella of the studio’s corporate membership.

This entitles the teachers listed under the studio’s corporate membership to discounted rates for educational events offered by WACBTA, and to any other member benefits offered from time to time.

WACBTA welcomes student teachers, teacher assistants and dancers under the age of 18 who wish to learn more about teaching ballet and invites them to join as student members.   (If you are over 18, you are eligible to take out your own personal membership.)

Once you have submitted your application form to become a member, you will be directed to a page with instructions for making your payment.
Your application will be reviewed and we will send email confirmation to you within 10 days.   (Should your application be declined for any reason, a full refund will be available.)

Yes! We have a special category of membership for those under 18, and encourage students to join to access all the knowledge, experience and wisdom of your colleagues and of our presenters.

Yes, we welcome the experience and knowledge brought to WACBTA by senior teachers, even if they are no longer actively teaching.

Corporate membership allows a studio to give all of their teachers access to WACBTA events (and other member benefits or discounts that may apply from time to time).  All teachers covered under the corporate membership will receive information and special offers directly from WACBTA.

Yes , indeed.  If you want all the teachers in your studio to get the benefits of a membership, you can upgrade and we will credit your personal membership fee towards your corporate membership.  Just contact us and we will help you through the process.

No. WACBTA welcomes and encourages members from all ballet organisations, teaching all syllabi. We believe this broad range of knowledge and different experiences enhances the organisation's primary objective of sharing knowledge..

That is absolutely fine!  Many of the concepts and practical applications we explore in our sessions are equally applicable to other dance genres.

Your membership expires on 31 December each year.

The renewals system is currently under review and is likely to shortly become more automated, with a renewal notice being sent to members towards the end of each year.   However, at present, WACBTA sends an email to all members reminding them that subscriptions are due and directing them to a link to the renewal form.

Meet Scott putman

Scott Putman is a choreographer, movement educator, director and writer integrating contemporary ballet and modern techniques into practices deeply influenced by eastern philosophy, neuro science and contemporary physics.

He is the creator of the Elemental Body Alignment System© (EBAS) and Fundamental Conscious Movement (FCM); both of which support a holistic approach of remapping neural muscular pathways, expanding greater range of motion as well as encouraging qualitative expression for a more authentic and holistic movement practice.

Since graduating with a BFA in Dance and Choreography in from Columbia College, he has created dance works focused on the belief that choreography is the art of shaping energy in space. Scott has also danced with both modern and ballet companies such as Mordine and Company Dance Theater, Ballet Theater of Chicago, Minnesota Ballet, Demetrius Klein Dance Company as well as his own company Cerulean Dance Theater in addition to several independent choreographers such as Bob Eisen and Randy Duncan.

After extensive performing, Scott returned to the academic arena at the University of California, Irvine (UCI) where he received his MFA exploring the parallels of modern physics and eastern philosophy as a vehicle of expression and physical training.

Directly after his time at UCI he was invited to join the faculty at Virginia Commonwealth University in the department of Dance and Choreography as a visiting professor which turned into a 22 year run as a tenured professor teaching across the curriculum in both the technical and creative tracks. During this time he continued to develop his choreographic vision with Amaranth Contemporary Dance and shared EBAS levels I and II with the student body.

Most recently Scott has turned to weaving his skills in Neuro-Kinesiology, Traditional Chinese Medicine, Thai Body Work and Equine Assisted Learning under the umbrella of Emerald Energetics which focuses on movement, sound, light and equine assisted wellness. He continues to create three dimensional kinetic landscapes for professional dance companies and universities world wide.
