Certificate IV in Dance Teaching and Management - classical ballet

HOW TO APPLY:

Applicants will be evaluated on the following criteria, which they should address in their personal statement (See application form  below):

  • Evidence of financial obstacles that are impacting their ability to pursue professional advancement
  • Evidence of how the sponsorship will help them reach their personal and professional goals
  • Evidence of how the sponsorship will be used to impact their students, work environment and/or the field of dance education
  • Evidence of having achieved an appropriate level of technical ability, and knowledge and understanding of classical ballet technique.   This evidence may be provided by the level of examinations passed, or if examinations have not been undertaken, by video evidence.
  • Evidence of a proactive and committed approach to classical ballet teaching

The applicant is also required to complete and upload a vision statement addressing their longer term goals, as well as the  following additional  selection criteria:

  • A strong commitment to personal development
  • An interest in contributing to and engaging with the wider dance teaching profession

Applicants will need to be members of WACBTA on application, and to remain a member for at least the duration of the course of study.  It is the hope and expectation of WACBTA that  applicants who have received financial support from WACBTA will continue to engage with WACBTA endeavours by acknowledging their support where possible, and by attending ongoing teacher development events and supporting other WACBTA initiatives.  It will also be a requirement of funding that on completion of the course, the applicant will submit a report on their experience with the Certificate IV for WACBTA marketing purposes.

The personal statement and vision should be uploaded with the application, along with a copy of evidence of the highest classical ballet examination achieved.    If the applicant has not undertaken formal examinations in any syllabus, evidence of technical proficiency may be demonstrated by uploading a video of the applicant in class.  Applicants can  obtain details of what specifically this video should demonstrate by clicking the link below:

If for any reason the applicant is unable to physically demonstrate the required steps, other video evidence of technical proficiency may be accepted.  Contact WACBTA for details.

The award of a sponsorship is conditional upon the applicant being accepted into the Certificate IV by Empowerdance Pty Ltd.   Should a student who has received financial assistance through the sponsorship fund fail to satisfactorily complete the course, they will be required to refund to WACBTA any monies paid by WACBTA.

All applications MUST be submitted in full by Tuesday, 1 September 2026.  No late applications will be accepted.

Applicants must be Full Members of WACBTA for the year of application, in order to be eligible to apply for sponsorship. If you are not already a Member, you may apply by clicking on the “Members” section on this website, and submitting your application. Sponsorships will be conditional upon the Member application being successful. Applicants will be required to maintain Full Membership of WACBTA for the duration of the study period.
If you have not undertaken formal examinations, you may submit video evidence of your technical prowess.
Please include any work you may have done on a voluntary basis, as an Assistant Teacher, or as a solo teacher. Meet Scott putman

Scott Putman is a choreographer, movement educator, director and writer integrating contemporary ballet and modern techniques into practices deeply influenced by eastern philosophy, neuro science and contemporary physics. 

He is the creator of the Elemental Body Alignment System© (EBAS) and Fundamental Conscious Movement (FCM); both of which support a holistic approach of remapping neural muscular pathways, expanding greater range of motion as well as encouraging qualitative expression for a more authentic and holistic movement practice.

Since graduating with a BFA in Dance and Choreography in from Columbia College, he has created dance works focused on the belief that choreography is the art of shaping energy in space. Scott has also danced with both modern and ballet companies such as Mordine and Company Dance Theater, Ballet Theater of Chicago, Minnesota Ballet, Demetrius Klein Dance Company as well as his own company Cerulean Dance Theater in addition to several independent choreographers such as Bob Eisen and Randy Duncan.

After extensive performing, Scott returned to the academic arena at the University of California, Irvine (UCI) where he received his MFA exploring the parallels of modern physics and eastern philosophy as a vehicle of expression and physical training.

Directly after his time at UCI he was invited to join the faculty at Virginia Commonwealth University in the department of Dance and Choreography as a visiting professor which turned into a 22 year run as a tenured professor teaching across the curriculum in both the technical and creative tracks. During this time he continued to develop his choreographic vision with Amaranth Contemporary Dance and shared EBAS levels I and II with the student body.

Most recently Scott has turned to weaving his skills in Neuro-Kinesiology, Traditional Chinese Medicine, Thai Body Work and Equine Assisted Learning under the umbrella of Emerald Energetics which focuses on movement, sound, light and equine assisted wellness. He continues to create three dimensional kinetic landscapes for professional dance companies and universities world wide.
